LAU CHUN

With bold and daring strokes, Lau Chun reveals himself. In a style that almost defies definition, he invites us into the dreamlike world he creates on canvas. He paints from within; he encourages us to see that way.

The artist himself epitomizes inventiveness in balance with discipline. Born in China in 1942, Lau studied for two years at the Canton School of Fine Arts. With a solid foundation in the ordered and exacting style of classical Asian artists, he left for Hong Kong. It was there he was hired by the famous Mexican muralist and mosaicist, Francis Bobo. He worked with Bobo for eight years- the mosaic backgrounds in many of Lau's oils are no accident.

In 1968, the Revox Corporation of Switzerland bestowed a two-year scholarship grant upon Lau enabling him to study extensively in Europe. Revox sponsored exhibits of his work in Hamburg and Copenhagen at the end of the two-year period. Since that time, Lau has had numerous one-man shows from Hong Kong to Texas and his work hangs in such distinguished collections as Alexander & Baldwin (Hawaii), Marshall Field & Company (Chicago), and the Nelson Rockefeller Collection (New York).

Lau came to Hawaii in 1971, adding the influence of the brilliant colors of the islands to his already distinctive style. "People ask me, ' Lau what does your painting say?' I tell them simply, 'Color.' Color is both my means and my end. Color, you see, is filled with emotion. Color is constantly changing. And most important of all, color is creative."

Lau's oils are filled with emotion. Because he paints what he feels, his mood may find expression in a human form. Or it may seek the style of abstraction. Or it may be immersed in impressionism. But in every painting, no matter how gentle the subject matter, there is the powerful instinct for composition and color.

Like the Asian masters, Lau is greatly influenced by the changing panorama of nature. "In my paintings, I emphasize color and space as a portrayal of tranquil and absolutely flawless scenery, as well as feelings and emotions. Nature has a lingering impact on an artist. A mountain, the sea, the sky, the tropical plants indigenous to Hawaii all have infinite color variations and contrasts which result from changing weather. These elements find their way into my paintings, subconsciously or otherwise."

Lau Chun is part of the scenes he paints, living inside the spirit of what he sees. For an artist of such sensibilities as Lau Chun, there is no other way. Art cannot be accomplished with only the eye and the hand. Something vital is lost. Inspiration must flow from within; creativity must come from the inside.

In the fabulous canvases of Lau Chun the language is color, the subject is life and the message is pure celebration.

Having a second residence in Carmel, many of his paintings reflect the gardens and vistas of the area.
