Linda Lee and Kerry Kinman
Remnants of desert sun sparkle in the eyes of Linda Lee and Kerry Kinman when
they talk about their love for the Sonora, Mojave and Colorado deserts. Every
spring, since 1983, they have explored these desert regions in their motor home
which acts also as a traveling studio. They spend four months collecting images
of mountain ranges, desert washes and wildflowers. Every scene they paint is an
actual place they have been.
If
there has been ample rainfall, the desert is alive with a colorful and fragrant
wildflower explosion. Linda Lee and Kerry strive to capture the desert’s
fleeting beauty. They want to share this experience with others who may not
realize that the desert has more to offer than sand and heat.
The Kinmans learned their painting technique from Kerry’s mother, renowned
artist Florence Sackett. They both paint in oils on Belgium linen canvas using
only painting knives which they make themselves. Their unique technique of
applying paint onto the canvas is atypical of most palette knife painters.
Instead of using heavy impasto they use very little paint to achieve crisp and
concise details. The only brush work in their paintings is their signatures.
The tiny flower petals and fine thorny spines on the cactus might lead viewers
to suspect that their knives are as small as dental tools when, in fact, they
are actually quite large. A large boat-shaped knife with a pointed end about
three inches long is used the most. Kerry fashioned this out of a large
triangular knife which he ground and sanded until it had a weight and feel they
liked.
Kerry Kinman and Linda Lee have both been full time artists since 1980. They
feel fortunate to be able to spend time together doing what they love. They
spend their summer and fall in their home in Oregon. In the winter, when the
rain seems never-ending, they head to the beautiful Southwest deserts to enjoy
the sun and wildflowers. They also revisit familiar places and the many friends
they have made over their years of travel.
Their art can be found in the collections of many discerning art collectors
throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. They have been featured in
many magazines including Southwest Art, Art West, Wildlife Art,
Arizona Now, and Yippi Yi Yea. It is also a great honor that one
of Kerry’s images was chosen to adorn the cover of the Scottsdale, Arizona
Community Phone Book 2006-07.
