Elizabeth Weiss

Born in 1972, Elizabeth Weiss grew up in western Massachusetts and from

an early age, she demonstrated a strong artistic ability which was recognized and

encouraged throughout her education. Before attending college, Elizabeth

received awards for her drawings in both regional and national art competitions.

At the age of seventeen, she travelled to Europe and was thoroughly captivated

by the exquisite beauty of European art.

Elizabeth continued her education at Muhlenberg College in Allentown,

Pennsylvania where she vigorously studied drawing, painting, sculpture and art

history. During the summer of her sophomore year she attended the intensive

drawing and painting programs at The New York Studio School in Manhattan.

She was encouraged by her professors there to continue her studies at Indiana

University, in Bloomington, because of the strong, realist approach to their

School of Fine Arts curriculum. It was at Indiana University that she truly fell in

love with painting. Elizabeth chose to extend her studies to a fifth year, earning a

Bachelor of Fine Arts and receiving the highest honors for Excellence in Painting

upon her graduation in 1996. Her artwork has been included in many national

and international exhibitions.

Elizabeth Weiss' paintings are recognized for their rich, lustrous color, depth

and fine detail. Her painting technique embraces the principles of European

refinement and Classicism, primarily those of the 17th century Dutch artists.

She achieves a distinctive luminous glow and depth of color through the many

transparent and semi-opaque paint layers which she carefully applies. She often

selects subjects with an inherent sense of fragility yet endurance. Elizabeth seeks

to create a world in which objects are closely related by the spaces and light that

they share.

Her paintings are included in private collections in Massachusetts, Vermont,

Connecticut, New York, Virginia, Indiana and California.
