Michael Malm

(b. 1972 American)

"Painting for me is about expressing a feeling or emotion through visual means. Perhaps it is the beauty of light moving across the form or a harmony of color. It may be a lyricism to the design that strikes an emotional chord in me, or the striking contrast of value and color, etc. The juxtaposition of things; a figure in the landscape, or contrasting figures, like young verses old, or work versus play, can really add to the meaning of a piece.

My purpose in painting is to communicate the emotions and beauty that I experience to the viewer with the hope that the painting will trigger a similar emotional response in them. Ultimately, I hope my work uplifts and inspires."

Michael lives in the beautiful Cache Valley of northern Utah with his wife, Juanita, and their four children. The surrounding rural communities and setting provide backdrops for his figure paintings and inspiration for his landscapes. His serious study began under Del Parson at Dixie College where he completed his associate’s degree. He then went on to Southern Utah University where he had the opportunity to study with Perry Stewart, and completed his formal education at Utah State University where he received a Master of Fine Arts Degree studying under Glen Edwards. Workshops have also played an important part of his development studying with such master painters as Richard Schmid, Burton Silverman, Daniel Gerhartz, Quang Ho, Ron Hicks, Michael Workman, and Jim Norton.

"I am grateful to have studied under some great artists. I am always inspired by their work, and grateful for their ability and willingness to pass along their knowledge to me."
