Rizimu Chiwawa
Stone Sculptor
Rizimu Chiwawa
is gaining a reputation for exploring new techniques
that
have
taken
traditional
Zimbabwe
sculpture
into
new
creative
territory.
Winning the
highly competitive 2014 National Arts Merit
Award for
“Outstanding
Mixed Media”,
Rizimu
was honored for this
pioneering vision.
Born in 1982, he
started his art career as a painter.
For Rizimu, painting
was not enough to fulfill his creative energy and vision.
He turned back
to his family roots to find inspiration from his father,
renowned
“First
Generation”
sculptor
Edward
Chiwawa.
He
joined
the
famed
Tengenenge Arts Centre in Guruve for 3 years before
moving on to the
capital city of Harare to join the Chitungwiza Arts
Centre in 2014.
Chiwawa sees artists as a mirror of society with their
ability to put various
aspects of life on the map for all to see.
“Most of my artwork addresses
issues that affect women. Women were created in a special
way and they
have to be respected."
Mentally and creatively he
is focused and determined to work
hard to
make sure stone sculpture grows and evolves in Zimbabwe.
His
unique
vision
and
style
have
brought
invitations
to
attended
workshops
in
Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
International travel
broadened his
outlook and his willingness to innovate and experiment,
which has led to
many new techniques being included in his “mixed media”
sculptures.
